Bilingual Education for Americans Research Paper

Bilingual Education for Americans - Research Paper Example In the United States, Bilingual instruction centers around the students of English. The United States Department of Education takes note of that a bilingual instructive program is training program for constrained English capable understudies (ed.gov/). It is this definition that has stayed in the government however there are a few regions where it has become undesirable. This is on the grounds that such a definition pretty much shows that the understudy needs or requires support in the English language for the person in question to succeed scholastically. In practically all, if not in all the states, there is a general inclination by the gatherings pushing for bilingual training framework that it doesn't assist with having this thought and they likewise don't discover a defense for such a definition. History has it that the soonest occasion of bilingual instruction in the United States happened with the foreigners from Poland who first for all time settled in an English talking regio n of Virginia. As of now it was just the privileges of the English individuals that were perceived. It was because of the need that the English had for the abilities of the Poles that got comparative rights to the Englishmen and figured out how to build up a bilingual school (Seidner, p.72). In this school, the subjects were educated in both Polish and English, and this proceeded in different places in some structure or framework. It extended to Native Americas, the Dutch, the Czech, the Germans, French, Spanish and Norwegians in the century that followed. A few states created laws to address this issue contingent upon the requests of the outsiders. There are bunches that accept that a bilingual instruction ought to be vital, regardless of whether incidentally so as not to oppress remote conceived understudies, or update them. Then again, there the individuals who guarantee that English ought to be the national language, and until each understudy is capable in English, the way that they can communicate in another dialect blocks their improvement in the English language and hinders the general procedure of learning in America. Albeit most activities against bilingual training have consistently had a dominant part lead with regards to this issue, I hold the assessment that the world has become a worldwide town. Thusly, I accept that a bilingual training ought to be obligatory for Americans, beginning in Elementary school, through optional school and even in the university levels as the need may require. This position is exceptionally founded on the reality the quantity of workers whose kids are at the time of going to class however talk next to no or no English, are prevented the advantages from securing having the option to go to class at the suitable age. Much of the time there is normally a kind of medicinal classes that they need to go to where they are encouraged just English before they get the chance to turn out to be a vital part of the primary school ed ucational plan. In an arrangement of Bilingual instruction, the need of such classes would not be major and the kids will have the option to learn with no respect of the language that they talk at home or with which they grew up. This is on the grounds that the educational plan would incorporate their language as well. The Advantages of Having a Bilingual Education System They hold the feeling that it doesn't assist with keeping non-English talking kids out school for them to ace the English langu

Tips to Choose a Professional College

Tips to Choose a Professional CollegeWhen you have a work-related education, your professional college and university, the Ph.D., M.A., or master's degree will be in good hands. Most employers will choose individuals with these degrees over others. But if you are considering a professional education, you need to think carefully about which program you should select. The first thing to consider is whether you want a bachelor's degree or a master's degree. Bachelor's degrees tend to pay more money than other forms of education, while master's degrees tend to pay less money. But don't worry if you decide to get a master's degree. You will get a better job as a result. If you do decide to go to a professional college, you must make sure that you select a school that is reputable. The institution should be accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, so look for a degree provider that has been in business for a while. The Better Business Bureau, which is a governm ent-supported organization, also provides information on accredited schools. The next step in deciding which professional college to attend is to decide what type of education you want. You can choose a four-year college, a two-year college, or an online college. If you are considering going to a four-year college, you must make sure that the curriculum of the college is accredited. You may also have to meet state requirements for a high school diploma. Also, you must also be able to pass a test that is similar to the GRE exam. If you are planning to get a master's degree, you need to take all of these tests and be confident about what you have learned. When you choose a college, you have to decide how much you are willing to pay. Most colleges have a scholarship department that will help you apply for funding. While this means that you will have to work hard to get the funds, this method gives you the chance to take care of the costs that you have to pay.In order to find a college tha t is right for you, you must evaluate your career goals and interests. Are you interested in taking a class on exercise physiology, or in neurophysiology? The History of Sao Paulo

Sà £o Paulo, Brazil is the largest city in Latin America, edging out runner-up Mexico City by a couple of million inhabitants. It has a long and interesting history, including serving as home base for the infamous Bandeirantes. Foundation The first European settler in the area was Joà £o Ramalho, a Portuguese sailor who had been shipwrecked. He was the first to explore the area of present-day Sà £o Paulo. Like many cities in Brazil, Sà £o Paulo was founded by Jesuit Missionaries. Sà £o Paulo dos Campos de Piratininga was established in 1554 as a mission to convert Guainà ¡s natives to Catholicism. In 1556-1557 the Jesuits built the first school in the region. The town was strategically located, being between the ocean and fertile lands to the west, and it is also on the Tietà ª River. It became an official city in 1711. Bandeirantes In the early years of Sà £o Paulo, it became the home base for the Bandeirantes, which were explorers, slavers, and prospectors who explored the interior of Brazil. In this remote corner of the Portuguese Empire, there was no law, so ruthless men would explore the uncharted swamps, mountains and rivers of Brazil taking whatever they wanted, be it native slaves, precious metals or stones. Some of the more ruthless Bandeirantes, such as Antonio Rapà ´so Tavares (1598-1658), would even sack and burn Jesuit missions and enslave the natives who lived there. The Bandeirantes explored a great deal of the Brazilian interior, but at a high cost: thousands, if not millions of natives, were killed and enslaved in their raids. Gold and Sugar Gold was discovered in the state of Minas Gerais at the end of the seventeenth century, and subsequent explorations discovered precious stones there as well. The gold boom was felt in Sà £o Paulo, which was a gateway to Minas Gerais. Some of the profits were invested in sugarcane plantations, which were quite profitable for a time. Coffee and Immigration Coffee was introduced to Brazil in 1727 and has been a crucial part of the Brazilian economy ever since. Sà £o Paulo was one of the first cities to benefit from the coffee boom, becoming a center for coffee commerce in the nineteenth century. The coffee boom attracted Sà £o Paulo’s first major wave of foreign immigrants after 1860, mostly poor Europeans (particularly Italians, Germans, and Greeks) seeking work, although they were soon followed by a number of Japanese, Arabs, Chinese, and Koreans. When slavery was outlawed in 1888, the need for workers only grew. Sà £o Paulo’s considerable Jewish community also was established around this time. By the time the coffee boom fizzled in the early 1900s, the city had already branched out into other industries. Independence Sà £o Paulo was important in the Brazilian independence movement. The Portuguese Royal Family had moved to Brazil in 1807, fleeing Napoleon’s armies, establishing a royal court from which they ruled Portugal (at least theoretically: in reality, Portugal was ruled by Napoleon) as well as Brazil and other Portuguese holdings. The Royal family moved back to Portugal in 1821 after the defeat of Napoleon, leaving eldest son Pedro in charge of Brazil. The Brazilians were soon angered by their return to colony status, and Pedro agreed with them. On September 7, 1822, in Sà £o Paulo, he declared Brazil independent and himself Emperor. Turn of the Century Between the coffee boom and wealth coming from mines in the interior of the country, Sà £o Paulo soon became the richest city and province in the nation. Railroads were built, connecting it to the other important cities. By the turn of the century, important industries were making their base in Sà £o Paulo, and the immigrants kept pouring in. By then, Sà £o Paulo was attracting immigrants not only from Europe and Asia but from within Brazil as well: poor, uneducated workers from the Brazilian northeast flooded into Sà £o Paulo looking for work. The 1950s Sà £o Paulo benefited greatly from the industrialization initiatives developed during the administration of Juscelino Kubitschek (1956-1961). During his time, the automotive industry grew, and it was centered in Sà £o Paulo. One of the workers in the factories in the 1960s and 1970s was none other than Luiz Inà ¡cio Lula da Silva, who would go on to become president. Sà £o Paulo continued to grow, both in terms of population and influence. Sà £o Paulo also became the most important city for business and commerce in Brazil. Sà £o Paulo Today Sà £o Paulo has matured into a culturally diverse city, powerful economically and politically. It continues to be the most important city in Brazil for business and industry and lately has been discovering itself culturally and artistically as well. It has always been on the cutting edge of art and literature and continues to be home to many artists and writers. It is an important city for music as well, as many popular musicians are from there. The people of Sà £o Paulo are proud of their multicultural roots: the immigrants who populated the city and worked in its factories are gone, but their descendants have kept their traditions and Sà £o Paulo is a very diverse city.

Organization theory- learning journal Example

Essays on Organization theory- learning journal Article Organization Theory – Learning Journal: Organizations as Brains and Social Domination Organizations as Brains and Social Domination In an article entitled â€Å"Leading Brain-Like Organizations: Toward Synthesis And Practical Guidelines† written by Tatevik Avetyan, an Honors College Theses published online by the Pforzheimer Honors College on 2006 proffered pertinent issues relative to the metaphor that sees organizations as brains. Avetyan (2006) presented a comparative analysis between the human brain and an organization. From among the similarities between the human brain and organizations noted, the following are noteworthy: â€Å"the human brain is an open social system; it requires proper collection and analysis of information; and it is comprised of units and subunits that perform unique functions† (Avetyan, 2006, p. 13). Likewise, it was also emphasized that just like organizations, â€Å"the human brain is a well-balanced structure in terms of differentiation and integration; centralization and decentralization; standardization and mutual adjustment† (Avetyan, 2006, p. 13). Concurre ntly, on the disparities side, the author indicated areas such as flexibility, structure, and degrees of competitiveness and cohesiveness. The summarized comparative analysis appears below: Similarities and Differences between Organizational and Brain Structure Similarities 1. Organizations and Brains are mechanisms for information-processing. 2. Organizations and Brains are networks. 3. Organizations and Brains are designed with varying degrees of differentiation and integration, centralization and formalization. 4. Organizations and Brains have both mechanistic and organic characteristics. Differences 1. Organizations tend to be more flexible whereas Brains tend to be more rigid. 2. Organizations have taller hierarchical structure whereas Brains have flatter structure. 3. Organizations have more internal competition whereas Brains have team cohesiveness. Source: Avetyan, 2006, p. 17 This is an very informative and comprehensive article that compares an organization to the human brain. Likewise, through actual case studies of organizations such as Microsoft and Enron, the author tried to apply the research hypotheses and effectively concluded that â€Å"structure ensures an entity’s success or failure as evidenced by the human brain†¦ more and more organizations must become more â€Å"brain-like†, that is, be able to adopt the correct type of structure† (Avetyan, 2006, p. 24). In terms of seeing the organization as a process of domination, the paper written by Xavier Leflaive entitled â€Å"Organizations as Structures of Domination† and published in the Sage Journals in 1996 discussed areas that touched on descriptors of power, domination, hierarchy, reflexivity, surveillance, and critical theory. The article was likewise published online by the CBS Interactive Resource Library. Consistent with the information that were discussed in the course, organizations were seen as vehicles of operating for the selfish interests of achieving the goals of a few at the expense of many. (Leflaive, 1996). As emphasized by Leflaive, â€Å"organizations are best portrayed as structures of domination, where power and domination refer to a collective capacity to act. They are fragile, transient accomplishments, momentarily concentrating resources for collective action† (p. 1). The author likewise stressed the study was part of a comprehensive research which de picts the organization as reflective social systems (Leflaive, 1996, p. 1). It likewise manifests its existence as part of the society where its operations influence and are influenced by external factors that either strengthen or limit their operations and existence. Questioning the Law Essay Example For Students

Questioning the Law Essay Throughout the course of human history, people have advanced technology and educated minds in ways that once would not have seemed impossible. From caves drawings to televisions and from the bow and arrow to the machine gun, humans have continually improved their standard of living over the years. Although we now have all sorts of things people could only dream of a thousand years ago, we still live like cavemen in many ways. One of these ways is our contempt refusal to tolerate severe injustice at many levels of society. Just like most problems, injustice starts at the top, and often starts with the people that are supposed to be preventing it. Corrupt police officers and law agencies have been sifting through the sieve of true justice for years, and continue to do so today. From Hitlers horrifying Gestapo police of the 1940s to the more recent beating of Rodney King, police officers have abused their powers like a broken record. Police have engaged in unjustified shootings, severe beatings, fatal chokings, and unnecessarily rough treatment of citizens in rural and urban areas from New York to Los Angeles. Just as the founders of our great nation stood to face the British in the 18th century, and just as our forefathers fought to free us from the shackles of slavery, we must now fight to ensure that our democracy is not tainted by the practice of unjust or discriminatory law. Drunk Ohio Cop Found Passed Out (Drunk) In Burger King Drive-Thru. This was a headline on CNN.com on February 21, 2005. This kind of story serves as an example that not all of our police officers are as moral as they claim to be. The most disturbing part of this story wasnt that this police veteran was found intoxicated in his dispatch car, its that this man had the power of our law behind him for years before this happened. Many of the thousands of laws that help police officers do things like pull you over for no legitimate reason, or come into your house without probable cause, were constructed for just these purposes. This fact goes hand in hand with a quote from Tacitus, a famous Roman historian and philosopher, the more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws. Police officers sometimes lack a crucial prerequisite for their job, common sense. Instead of getting drug dealers and other dangerous criminals off the streets, they are often seen in packs of three to five investigating events like fireworks in the dorms, or streakers. Underage drinking is another favorite for police officers. Packs of police officers love to flock to areas where potential underage drinkers are suspected of gathering. This is especially evident on college campuses, where it is inevitable that underage kids will drink. Is it really necessary for three officers to approach and arrest a kid who has had a few drinks and is walking home from a party? These kids are of no danger to anyone but themselves. It is our right as Americans and as human beings to make our own choices, and as long as we arent causing any trouble or endangering other people, we shouldnt have to worry about being harassed by brainless law enforcement officials. Although it may sound grim, I believe there is a brighter future for law enforcement. Looking at history shows us that the trend of injustice in the police department has slowly declined over time. There are thousands of competent and intelligent police officers throughout our country, and I hope that this majority will continue to grow.Just as we must question our government in order to ensure that it flourishes, we must also question the law. Not only must we question it, we must learn it. We must learn about the rights that we possess, and we cant be afraid to act on these rights when the time comes. .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 , .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .postImageUrl , .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 , .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31:hover , .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31:visited , .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31:active { border:0!important; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31:active , .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31 .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u20066038367bda41500c6f581a421e31:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Creation Vs Evolution Essay Knowing our rights and properly using laws that we have made for ourselves are our duties and responsibilities as citizens of this country. The Case of Madoff

Summary of the Article about Madoff Scandal Lots of people have already heard about the scandal, connected to the activities of Bernard Madoff. So many papers present numerous articles, where the writers are eager to share their points of views about the situation and present more new captivating facts. The article from Economist attracts my attention because of several reasons. First of all, it is mentioned that â€Å"there are no heroes in the Madoff story; only villains and suckers† (The Economist).Advertising We will write a custom report sample on The Case of Madoff specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The point is that Mr. Madoff admits that his fraud connected with more than $50 billion looks like plausible. However, the victims of this very fraud cannot agree to this truth. Among these victims, there are such celebrities as Steven Spielberg and Carl Shapiro. The creators of the article Con of the Century focus on severa l warnings for the future situation within the economical sphere. First of all, Mr. Madoff confessed that his pyramid according to which clients’ incomes were considerably increased by means of new investments, this is why his fraud has several positive results. Of course, it does not make Mr. Madoff a hero, and underlines that frauds may rule the world one more time. People do not to pay attention to the mistakes, made by dangerous fraudsters, if these mistakes are paid. Money may control lots of situations, and the scandal with Mr. Madoff serves as a good example. Even if many firms, which had some kind of connection with Madoff’s affairs, are sick and tired to brace themselves with numerous court trials, they still have some kind of income and do not worry about their future. This is why this article under consideration helps to comprehend that victims, heroes, and bad people are not inherent to Madoff’s scandal; and demonstrate one more time that frauds cann ot be forgotten. Person Opinion as for the Madoff’s Scandal The first point that attracts my attention is that it were Madoff’s children, who blamed their father in all those numerous frauds, which lead to 150 years of prison. To my mind, such a serious attitude to money and the desire to get as much as possible should not be inherent to the members of one and the same family. We live in the 21st century, and intrigues connected to family money were the peculiarity of the beginning of the 20th century. I read that â€Å"Bernard L. Madoff has been a major figure in the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), the major self-regulatory organization for U. S. broker dealers firms† (Schwartz et al., 187) This is why I was a bit surprised that such a responsible person may cause such unpleasant and dangerous financial difficulty for so many people.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More To my mind, the case of Madoff should symbolize a kind of end of the era, where people could earn easy money. This case is a turning point in the history of American finance system that has to be evaluated in order to make the same mistake in future (MacDonald Hughes, 268). And, telling the truth, 150 years of imprisoning is not the best way out. A person has already stolen so much money, so that it is necessary to order him to use this money to help those people, who cannot get money for living. There are so many people, who need money in order to pay for operations, those people, who ask some money for eating, etc. This is why it is better to think how to use the already done fraud to help other people. In this case, people start being afraid of frauds and start thinking that all their money may be lost in several minutes. Maybe, such decision helps to prevent frauds and other unpleasant changes. Free Essays on Causes Of Salem Witch Trials

The Causes of the Salem Witchcraft Trials Page 1 Introduction The Salem Witchcraft trials took place in a Puritan devoted community of Massachusetts in 1692. The trials resulted in the execution of nineteen men and women, and one man who was pressed to death with stones. The theories of what caused the accusations are numerous but I will attempt to explore a few of them. The most widely known theory is that misogyny, the prejudice of women, was to blame for the witchcraft trials. The Puritans were raised with strict religious views on morality and generally oppressed females based on their religious beliefs. Puritans believed that women were more at risk at becoming cohorts with the devil. Another possible explanation for the strange behavior is that is has a physiological origin. Ergotism is a disorder caused by ingesting contaminated grains of rye or other grasses. Symptoms of ergotism include vomiting, hallucinations, and a burning sensation in the extremities, Volk, T. (1999). The accounts of the girls’ behavior suggest the possibility of ergot poisoning. Another physiological theory is that the girls were suffering from encephalitis lethargica. Some of the symptoms of this form of encephalitis include double vision, abnormal eye movements, and behavioral changes including psychosis, Wikipedia Encyclopedia. Many historians also believe that quarrels among the families were a major cause of the disturbing events that occurred in Salem Village. Commercial Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Commercial Law - Essay Example If the organization decides that they want a refund of their money or the leather, then they are a few steps to be followed. First and fore most, since the organization has already been notified that the company is being liquidated, they automatically become a trustee1. This is in relation to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. In the United Kingdom, the law that is responsible for dealing with both individuals and firms that face bankruptcy or insolvency is the Insolvency Law of the United Kingdom. There are key statutes that are involved in the bankruptcy and insolvency act. These include the Insolvency act 1986 which was amended by the Enterprise Act 2002, the Companies Act 2006 and the Company Director Disqualification Act 19862. The pari passu is the essential procedure that dictates how the goods will be distributed among the creditors in the UK insolvency law. Unless the statute displays preferred creditors, then a contract might be used that was signed between the organization and the creditor3. Since the Leather Craft knows where their goods lie, and they have been automatically declared as creditors, the contract they signed will assist them in the process. This means that the security interests to the assets of the company are entitled to the creditor. In this case, the approach that the law of UK takes is to give out either specific or fixed asset that the creditor has applied for. Situated at the Companies House, the law requires the interested assets of the company are filed on the companies charges of register. Leather craft must provide a debenture. Debenture simply means that the document which contains either the secured or unsecured debt owed by the company to their creditors4. Although the companies Act of 2006 requires the organization to have its own list of debentures, the Companies House requires all the debentures, which are secured by charge, be registered with them5. The main aim of the registration is to find out which company should be given first priority in the list of creditors. First, the Leather Craft companies must decide whether they can make an agreement with the company, which is voluntary on how to receive their dues. If they want a refund, they can agree with the board of directors for the Cattlerear Ltd if they can receive less in order to assist the company from insolvency6. Consequently, since the required goods are in the warehouse and they have already paid for them, they can agree to possess up the goods that are in the warehouse. In addition to that, if the company goes under new administration, this is according to the Enterprise Act of 2002 in which a trained insolvency practitioner will take up as new administration7. If this happens, since the specific goods that the Leather Craft industry wants are in the warehouse, they can agree with the new Cattlerear ltd administrator to have their goods, which are located in the warehouse. However, if none of these procedures are taken up, then all t he assets of the companies can be sold and the Leather Craft industry can have their refund back if they do not want the leather that the Cattlerear has which is located in their warehouse. This is after the Leather Craft Industry has completed either forms that display that they owe the company the goods and that they want a refund of their money back or their goods in which they are aware they are located in the warehouse. It should be noted that if a qualified insolvency prac

Application of Business Vocabulary in Financial Articles Literature review

Application of Business Vocabulary in Financial Articles - Literature review Example In the article, the writer uses the keywords Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y. Baby Boomers are the children that were born in the post World War II economic boom. In the article, Keller uses the term as the oldest of the definable generational segments and further describes their propensity for being health and fashion conscious. Generation X and Generation Y are market segments that are differentiated by age, with Generation X being the older set. Keller uses the generational set as market segments and points out that the overlap between 18-34 is the fastest growing segment. The author makes no social or cultural comments on these segments. In the article titled "Six Tips for Buying or Expanding a Business" the author offers sound advice on how to enhance a business's chance for success. The author, Jeff Stone, takes the reader from building a solid foundation through the important aspect of making a profit. Stone also includes the intermediary steps of planning and seeking help when advantageous. The article advises the small business community on seeking investments and financing and the requirements that the financial institutions may require for success. These common sense issues include things such as creating a good brand image and keeping accurate company records. In the article Stone uses the keywords Small Business, Small Business Administration, and Business Plan. While the legal definition of a small business may vary from state to state or be dependant upon the institution involved, it is generally defined as a business that employs a small number of people. In Stone's article, he defines it and uses it in the context as those businesses that are of such small size they are especially vulnerable to changing conditions or lack of planning. The Small Business Administration (SBA) is a government agency designed to provide a wide variety of programs for small businesses. These can include everything from planning to financing. Stone uses the term in context with the planning help that is available at the SBA. A business plan is a well thought out and long term approach for planning and running a company. The author elaborates on this definition and includes many of the aspects of a business plan such as the necessity to obtain financing and benchmarks for measuring success. In an article published in 2002, author Jacqueline J. Kennelly argues that free trade and the associated movements towards globalization may have a negative effect on women's health care and feminism in general. Published in Canadian Woman Studies and titled "Making Connections: Women's Health and the Anti-Globalization Movement", the author argues the pros and cons of free trade and free trade associations and the impact of anti-globalization efforts. The author contends that the anti-globalization movement is often perceived as a white male-dominated institution and as such tends to overlook women's issues. Much of the argument centers on the movement towards privatization of health care systems and how they diminish the health care available to women.

Issues in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway Essay -- Woolf

Issues in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway revolves around several of the issues that preoccupied the Bloomsbury writers and thinkers as a group. Issues of androgyny, class, madness, and mythology run throughout the novel. While that is hardly an exhaustive list, these notions seem to form the core of the structure of the novel. Woolf herself, when envisioning the project, sought to produce â€Å"a study of insanity and suicide, the world seen by the sane and the insane side by side.† This issue of madness, in particular, gives the novel its form as we follow the twinned lives of Septimus Warren Smith and Clarissa Dalloway. These preoccupations, occuring in the biographical and intellectual lives of the disparate members of Bloomsbury, revolved around Virginia framing the preoccupations and concerns of the text. In terms of the ambiguous gender identities running throughout the text (Clarissa’s frigidity towards her husband, her sexual view of women, and Septimus’s effeminite nature), there is a tendency towards the asexual or the androgynous in the...

Desperate Air

What would I do if I was in George Nash’s position as Vice President of Real Estate at Desperate Air Corporation (a company in dire financial straits), and my pending sale of Florida property potentially had toxic waste buried beneath the surface. I found this to be the least challenging question posed thus far in terms of my own ethical beliefs. In this instance I would proceed with the sale without disclosing the information regarding what I had heard about the toxic waste. Clearly Florida law states that you do not have to disclose that there is a hazardous substance on commercial property as long as there is not a fraudulent statement about the property. Nash did his due diligence by hiring someone to do an environmental study. The company hired found nothing and a report was submitted to the buyers. Nash also consulted his attorney about what should be disclosed. Fledgling, the company purchasing the property, had the responsibility of performing their own due diligence. While a representative walked the property and found nothing, the article did not state whether or not Fledgling did a full environmental study as well. That should have been part of the purchaser’s process. If you purchase a home it is your responsibility to hire an impartial building inspector to look at your home and report on its condition. The Fledgling representative had the same responsibility to obtain an impartial environmental study. Had the representative done so, they probably would have discovered the toxic waste. It doesn’t matter that the DAC report did not include the disclosure. Unfortunately Fledglings representative was at fault here in my opinion. The fact that Nash prayed about the situation shows that he is not a cold hearted capitalist with only selfish motivations. Similarities between â€Å"Desperate Air† and the Seglin article are that two executives had to make choices that they believed would prevent their companies from potential financial ruin. Although I believe there are differences in the level of disclosure (I believe the CEO of the aircraft company had a financial responsibility to disclose his findings to the auditors), the process of deciding what to disclose is similar. Both parties consulted their attorneys whose guidance instructed them that they did not have to disclose the information. The motivating factor in both decisions was to protect the livelihood of their companies. The facts of the information that had been revealed to each company had not been proven. Had Nash followed the RDCAR process I believe the outcome of his decision may have been different. Nash did not go through the process of recognition. There was no survey of stakeholders. He did not even disclose the findings to his CEO. There was no chance to find out if withholding the toxicity information was something that would make other staff members uncomfortable. Nash did not engage in discovery. There was no attempt to build internal and external transparency. Fledgling did not have the opportunity to react to the information. There was a possibility that the sale would not have progressed if the information on toxic waste had been disclosed. It may have only delayed the sale, but there was no way to find that out. There was no cognition. No one in DAC management or any other DAC staff was presented with a â€Å"what would you do? scenario that would have spelled out company values. No policy or action was put into place to deal with the situation. The only action taken was that Nash consulted an attorney. Nash did reflect on the decision, but no one else in the company had the opportunity to do so. Due to the fact that there was no legal reason to disclose the information of toxic waste to Fledgling, and the fact that they failed to do their own due diligence, in this instance I would agree with Nash’s decision to proceed with the sale in order to help protect the financial position of DAC.

Thucydides Accounts of the Degradation of Athenian Honor

Thucydides account of the Peloponnesian war served as a window into Athenian societal culture. Carrying the reader from Pericles moving speech to the assembly, through Cleon and Diodotus oratory battle over the fate of Mytilene, and finally to the Athenian proposal to the Melians, Thucydides detailed the transformation of Athens from a state based on justice and freedom to a empire with a corrupted soul. This corruption did not occur over night, but was the result of increasing tyrannical behavior by the part of Athens in its interactions with other Greek city states. The stages of this development can be analyzed into three parts: Pericles war speech, the dialogue on Mytilene, and the Melian debate. Pericles speech was propagated by the horn of war against the Lacedaemonians. In the midst of the conflict, the Athenians called an assembly to determine their course of action. Their choices were to either agree to Spartas demands, which included dismantling the siege of Potidaea, freei ng Aegina from their rule, and cancelling their embargo of Megara, or war. At this juncture, the prime Athenian statesman, Pericles, presented his advice: never give in. For Pericles, Athens can never subjugate itself to any power and must fight for its autonomy. In order to win the war, Athens must focus on its people and avoid mistakes. They cannot base their campaign on saving their property, but keeping the integrity of their forces. This stance is exemplified as Pericles said,Show MoreRelatedEssay The Greek Economy2993 Words   |  12 Pagesevidence on Greek civilization comes from literary works.
